November Free Sheet Music: We Gather Together

š We Gather Together š a traditional Dutch hymn, is a celebrated part of the American Thanksgiving tradition. In 2020 my daughter and I wrote a verse of contemporary lyrics just for fun, and I sent out an easy arrangement to my subscribers. This year I wanted to revisit the song with a new arrangement in a new key: B-flat (2 flats) which I think will be more singable, and a good key to get familiar with, as many popular pieces are in the "flat keys." I also added a moving bass line to give the arrangement more rhythm. Lots of pieces have moving bass lines (especially music of the Baroque period) and I thought this might be a good opportunity to practice having both your hands in constant motion. It's not super easy to play, but moving bass lines are good for the brain and interesting to listen to. Learn the song in sections, maybe working on 2 measures at a time, hands separately then hands together.
The sheet music is only available for 1 year so print today!
I hope you are doing well in your part of the world. We had a fun Halloween followed by watching an exciting baseball game that had most of my home town (Los Angeles) viewing in homes, restaurants, bars and clubs. It was fun to see communities of strangers hugging and high-fiving each other as the Dodgers gained and held onto their fragile lead.
š Now we have Thanksgiving to look forward to, a favorite cozy holiday for bringing families together to cook and eat amazing food. I have always loved the value of giving thanks as we can all benefit from thinking about and expressing gratitude for our many blessings.
While I'm talking about gratitude, I want to thank you all for following my blog. I haven't written as much in the past busy year, but I am so grateful that you find enough value in my free monthly sheet music giveaway and other blog offerings to subscribe. Every time I see a new subscriber I feel uplifted! So thanks very much for that. I will continue to give you content I think you can use for as long you're stil interested in receiving my posts.
Next month I will be giving away free holiday music. Please leave suggestions in the comments below if you want to request a certain song or piece. Keep in mind that it must be in the Public Domain (written before 1930) or I can't give it away for free. Happy Thanksgiving piano friends, I hope you have much in your life for which to feel grateful including enough food, a safe place to live, and someone to love. Many thanks, with love and music, Gaili š

š P.S. If you are new to this blog, welcome! I post free sheet music every month, arranged for beginning to intermediate piano students, plus worksheets, practice tips and information on music and the brain. I have written piano instruction books for older adults (UpperHandsPiano.com), younger adults and teens (PianoPowered.com), Songs of the SeasonsĀ piano sheet music books for seasonal classical and popular favorites, and my latest piano/guitar/vocals books calledĀ The Music Remedy: sheet music collections to restore and revitalize the spirit.
In her review of my Upper Hands Piano BOOK 1 for Clavier Companion, The Piano Magazine (May/June 2016), Susan Geffen writes: āUpper Hands Piano, Gaili Schoenās comprehensive method for adults over fifty, is so good and so original that itās difficult to know where to begin. With the expert selection of repertoire? Or perhaps with Schoenās emphasis on the mental benefits of playing the piano? Or maybe with her friendly, encouraging tone? And certainly her well-considered approach to harmony is worth mention.ā
I hope you will check out my books on the links above as book sales support this blog and make my freebies possibly. Thanks so much for your support!š

Hi Gaili - You weren't kidding about We Gather Together being difficult to master. But by taking it a few measures at a time, as you advised, my brain seems to be catching on. Thanks for the challenge!
For holiday suggestions, I already have an easy version of I Saw Three Ships but would like to learn a more intermediate one if it is something you could arrange. I love those old English carols. Thank you!
