December Free Sheet Music; Wexford Carol, O Christmas Tree and Oh Chanukah!

Looking for new Christmas music this year, I came upon Wexford Carol, a beautiful traditional Irish carol. According to Wikipedia it was likely composed in the 15th or 16th Century in County Wexford, part of the Republic of Ireland.

I love this recording by Alison Krause and Yo-Yo Ma and there are many other beautiful renditions. I found the music in the original hymnal form, and adapted it a bit to the piano. It's an intermediate arrangement, but much of the melody is repeated, so it might not take early intermediate students too long to learn if you keep your fingering consistent. Once you get comfortable with the notes, I hope you will try singing the lyrics along with playing the piano score. The repeated section actually has additional lyric verses. You can find the English and the Irish lyrics here!

This sheet music will only be available for a year (through Nov. 2025), so print today!

As a gift to my subscribers, I am also giving away arrangements of O Christmas Tree and Oh Chanukah:

Happy December friends! I hope you are staying warm and cozy, and getting excited about the holidays. This year I want to bake gifts for my local students, but I haven't decided what to bake yet. Something yummy, but healthy. Any suggestions?

What piano pieces are you playing now? I've been playing some Gypsy Jazz, and also revisiting Beethoven's Sonata no.17, III: Allegretto, also known as his "Tempest" theme. It's gorgeous and complicated, and I love working on the difficult passages and seeing/hearing/feeling them come together, bit by bit. That's what it is to play the piano, we work doggedly on our pieces, noticing our incremental progress over time. It's very humbling! But rewarding, and so great for the brain. I hope you are enjoying some time on the bench as autumn turns to winter. Stay safe!

With much love and music, Gaili
